It doesn’t matter where you work or what you do, stress simply comes with the territory. Most of
us spend the majority of our time working, whether at the office or working from home. And in
today’s world, we’re always connected to our phones or computers, making it that much harder
to truly turn off and unwind. Making time for ourselves, to ensure we’re treating our bodies, our
minds and our souls with the tender love and care they deserve often gets overlooked or placed
very low on the priority list.
There are many ways to ease anxiety in the workplace, even if just for a few minutes each day.
Ahead are seven ways to center yourself when you’re at the office.
1. Listen to calming music.
I can’t seem to get anything done without music on in the background. And in those times when
I’m feeling overwhelmed, I put on my headphones and turn on music. Not everyday comes with
the same playlist, however. One day a 90’s hip hop playlist might be the ticket to a productive
afternoon – other days, Sam Smith or Adele can calm my nerves like nobody else. Keep the
headphones close by during the day and allow yourself to escape in your favourite melodies,
even if only for a song or two.
2. Go for a walk.
This is very beneficial if you feel like you’re on the verge of screaming (it happens!). Tell
whoever needs to know that you need to go on a 10-minute walk to clear your head. Even if you
can’t leave the building, just getting away from your desk for a quick lap around the office helps
you refocus and re-energize to the task at hand. And make a conscious effort not to think about
your impending tasks during your walk.
3. Take a YouTube break.
Social media isn’t normally a good way to ease stress, but rather than scrolling through
Facebook or Twitter to take your mind off your troubles, take a break to watch a funny YouTube
video from a favorite channel. Trust me, you’ll feel a LOT better than if you were to browse
through all your friends’ perfect vacation pictures on Instagram.
4. Visualize and breathe.
No obstacle is too big that you can’t concur it. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by deadlines and
last-minute changes from your boss. By trusting yourself, and recalling memories that associate
with wellness and relaxation always works wonders on me! Try this: close your eyes for 30
seconds and pretend you’re in a calm place, your bed, the beach, Costco – or whatever that
means to you. Put yourself there for a beat. Focus on the sights and sounds of this place, and
work on slowing your breathing.
5. Drink hot tea.
No coffee or sugary drinks. Hot tea with lemon is my go-to!
6. Keep a stress ball handy.
I keep stress balls on my desk for those moments when I really need to avoid hurting someone
else, or every myself. If you don’t have a stress ball, get one! Or, you can yell into a pillow,
shadow box the air or squeeze something to get out the nervous energy before the stress
manifests itself in another way.
7. Give yourself a massage (or better yet: LET US!)
There is nothing more appreciated then some good, old fashioned pampering. Treat yourself, or
your staff to a Pamper Station on a random day, just because! Enjoy a back or shoulder
massage, a Shiatsu foot massage or a hand massage in our multi treatment stations!
